Previously a maker of luxury and sports cars, the company saw the new saloon as its key to rivalling the BMW 3-Series. The 'baby' Jag drew heavily on parent firm Ford's Mondeo - but the four-wheel drive and V6 engines were exclusive. Conservative styling and a lacklustre interior let the X-Type down compared to rivals, so initial sales were disappointing. It took the launch of a front-wheel-drive V6 model and a 2.0-litre diesel to give the Jaguar a boost. On the second-hand market, diesel models are in short supply, and are highly prized as a result. The bargains of the range are the AWD V6 variants, which fetch as little as ΂£8,000, while there are plenty of 2.5-litre cars available used - and these are a tempting upmarket alternative to the Mondeo. Checklist* Boot: many owners have had trouble with the boot lock sticking. This fault tends to affect early examples of the X-Type. Dealers have a fix for the problem, and it has been cured on later cars.* Interior: rattling or ill-fitting trim has been reported, particularly with the very first examples. If there is a touch-screen centre console, make sure all the systems work. * Gearbox: later autos are smoother, due to improved software. First and reverse gears on manual AWD models can be stiff when cold, but slicker once the car is warm. * All-wheel drive: AWD variants suffer transmission whine, while clutches fail at low mileages if abused. Check front tyres for excessive wear, which can signal misaligned wheels. * Engine: all powerplants in the X-Type line-up have proved reliable so far. However, the V6s are thirsty, and smokey high-mileage examples should be avoided. Driving Impressions The Jaguar X-Type boasts sure-footed handling, with front-wheel-drive models proving as impressive as the AWD variants. What's more, its precise steering is matched by an even ride. While V6 cars are strong performers, they need revving hard, which hits economy. The 2.0-litre V6 version is predictably lethargic, but the diesel is superb. However, the gearchange can be notchy, and some models are difficult to drive smoothly in traffic. Glass's View A combination of patchy demand for petrol versions and generous deal-er incentives has contributed towards the X-Type's low residuals. This is good news for used car buyers looking for value. Depreciation for the diesel version has not been as heavy, and prices are likely to remain stable for the short term, at least. Estates are also in demand, but stocks are low, so there won't be much scope for haggling. High-spec examples struggle to sell unless their prices are low. It's spacious enough to embarrass the firm's larger S-Type, while equipment levels are impressive. The chassis handles with all the refinement buyers in this sector of the market expect. Ride quality is also good, and certainly a match for the BMW. However, the V6s are not fuel-efficient enough. Throw in a jerky transmission, and it is clear why the X-Type doesn't top the class yet. It was the smallest of the range of Jaguar saloons, and included the only estate model in the Jaguar range. The X-Type was one of the last to be styled under the supervision of Geoff Lawson, with the principal designer credited as Wayne Burgess.[3] Neither Jaguar nor Ford had a suitable small rear-wheel drive platform to base the X-Type on, and the decision was made to base the X-Type on a modified version of the Ford CD132 platform, the basis for the 2000 Ford Mondeo. In order to distinguish it from its rivals and its Ford origins, the X-Type was initially offered as all-wheel drive only and mated to a 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre AJ-V6 petrol engine. In 2003, the X-Type was offered in front-wheel drive with the introduction of Jaguar’s first four-cylinder diesel engines (based on the Ford Duratorq ZSD unit from the Mondeo and Transit), and with the smaller 2.0 litre petrol V6. [edit] Updates In 2004, a further body style was added with the introduction of an estate version, making it the second-ever Jaguar estate car. In North America, the estate was officially known as the "Sportwagon”. The X-Type received modifications to its grille design for the 2004 and 2006 model years, and a fuller facelift of the front end for the model year 2008, which included a redesigned front bumper and an overall look that echoed the 2008 Jaguar XF. [edit] 2.5 AWD Spirit Limited Edition (2005) Introduced in 2005, this limited edition model featured the 'Sports Collection' which comprised a new front lower spoiler; black mesh finish for both the upper and lower grille openings; lowered side sills; a new, lower rear valance; a more pronounced rear boot spoiler; and new exhaust tailpipe finishers. In addition to the Jaguar Sports Collection treatment, the 2.5 AWD Spirit Limited Edition featured a unique 'Spirit' badge on the right hand side of the boot plinth, below the 2.5 engine badge. The 450 produced units of the Spirit Limited Edition cars were offered with a choice of four different colour combinations: Platinum, Quartz, Ebony and Jaguar Racing Green. Built to be placed under the current XF, the 2012 X-Type will feature a cutting-edge design, the same as seen on the XF and XJ, but with much smoother curves. The car’s front will be distinguished by the XF’s rectangular mesh grille and swept-back headlights, while at the rear it will get boomerang tail-lamps and pronounced curves over the wheel arches. Rumours say that the next X-Type will be built on an all-new aluminum rear-wheel-drive platform, that will significantly improve fuel economy. Under the bonnet Jaguar will place a pair of downsized four-cylinder engines – diesel and petrol turbo units. They will also be turning up a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel and a hybrid version that will combine a V6 diesel with a 47 HP electric motor integrated into an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.[citation needed] [edit] Gallery 2001–2004 Jaguar X-Type saloon (UK) 2004–2005 Jaguar X-Type saloon (US) 2006–2007 Jaguar X-Type saloon (North America) 2008–2009 Jaguar X-Type estate [edit] Sales and reception Interviewed in November 2000, Jaguar managing director Jonathan Browning spoke of his objective of achieving annual sales of 100,000 with the car, partly by taking market share from established German rivals and partly by expanding the market segment in Jaguar's key markets.[6] The X-Type was indeed Jaguar's best-selling model during almost all its production run.[7] However, sales never met the company's expectations, peaking at 50,000 in 2003.[7] In the United States, the car's primary market, sales dropped from 21,542 in 2004 to 10,941 in 2005.[7] In the same year, Audi sold 48,922 A4s, BMW sold 106,950 3-series and Mercedes-Benz sold 60,658 C-classes.[7] Ford's decision to use a modified version of the Ford Mondeo platform (another variant of which is also used as the platform of the Land Rover Freelander[8] compact crossover SUV which is also produced at Halewood[8]) for the Jaguar X-Type wasn't received well by some enthusiasts of the British luxury marque.[9][10] TIME magazine would describe the X-Type as the "British Cadillac Cimarron" in its "50 Worst Cars of All Time" list, as the notion that it was badge-engineered made it unpopular.[11] However, numerous car magazine and website reviews were largely positive for the X-Type, especially during the early years of its introduction.[9][12] In reality, the X-Type used only 18% of Ford Mondeo's components,[13] while a variety of Ford platforms, engines and components were being used by all models of the Ford Motor Company's luxury brands in that period, namely Aston Martin, Jaguar and Lincoln. In 2008, Jaguar director of design Ian Callum claimed that, despite management denials at the time, the slow-selling X-Type “was essentially designed in Detroit and presented as close to a fait accompli to reluctant designers and engineers at Jaguar's Whitley design centre."[14] The facelifted model was expected to continue through to the 2010 model year in its remaining markets, and not to be directly replaced.
